Flowers Make Me Happy

The first time I received a bouquet of flowers at the door I was ecstatic & a little over whelmed. I was presented with a huge mixed arrangement that was so stunning I couldn’t stop staring at them.  The nineteen year old me instantly started a new addiction. Being a poor uni student at the time flower buying was a habit I couldn’t really afford every week. Instead I made sure I treated myself to any flowers I saw on sale. The trick is to head to flower shops/markets at the end of the trading day.

Not only do I enjoy bringing flowers into my life, sending flowers to others gives me just as much joy. My Interflora account is very well used, especially as I have a lot of friends & family overseas.

Why do I enjoy flowers so much? I am a visual, creative person. Most of my high school art classes were spent drawing & painting flowers. They have such depth and personality to them as well as vibrant colours and shapes. A room can come alive with a vase of fresh flowers. Pure joy.

Flowers to me represent nature, life, light, growth and health. Flowers are perfection, uninhabited; it amazes me how they just grow, blossom and bloom. How do they know how to do that? The wonders of Mother Nature. That is why I like having flowers in my home, bringing nature in doors.

Since I gave up drinking alcohol I’m saving a heap of money. This money saved from not buying my weekly bottle (or three) of sparkling white now forms my fun fund. Flowers fall into that category. Replacing an unhealthy habit with a healthy one. It comes down to happiness now. A bottle of wine might make me happy for one night. The next day not so happy. Flowers bring me pleasure for at least a whole week. Other people who visit or live with me will also gain joy from my flowers resent. If something makes me happy I am more than open to spend my hard earned dollars on it.

The other Saturday I did just that. There is a small independent florist stall by the supermarket I go too. This particular day they had a stunning bouquet of sunflowers for only $20. Why not I thought, they will look lovely in my healing room, especially as I had a full schedule of clients coming over. I’ll tell you something else too. Seven days later they are still going strong & I can see them living a few days longer. Amazing what a room filled with good ju ju can do.

Have you replaced a not so healthy habit with a more positive one that brings you joy? Please share in the comments below.

Be More Random

The last week of May seriously messed me up as I explained in my hibernation post. June rolled in and the cloud lifted, just like that. Seven days made such a difference. Resting up and taking it easy did the trick. It helped immensely I had a long weekend to really rejuvenate. I’m out the other side, happy, shining and ready to go.

Digging really deep and asking lots of inner questions lead me to realise what I’ve been missing recently. Randomness! My days are like most of yours I have a job that requires me to be there from 9-5. With this structured non negotiable I need to make sure the rest of my waking hours do not fall into the same boring routine of eat, sleep, work, exercise repeat. My Soul gets very grumpy when I forget this and that rigid structure becomes all day, every day. She needs to be random!

Saturday June 1st I was random. I took myself off to an Xtend Barre class then went shopping at a mall I never go to. It was lovely. I even bumped into a friend randomly & met some new people. I could feel my Soul jumping for joy, clapping her hands saying ‘how nice is this.’ The change of space was just what I needed to freshen things up.

My other job teaching yoga is very structured too. I have regular time slots I teach because of my day job. It is mixed up on a two-week rotation (more for the students sake!). We are able to switch and swap classes when something else comes up. I have been reluctant to do switches lately, as I didn’t want to upset my balance. Oh how wrong was I and stuck in that rut. I was on plateau central and needed step off. I had to trust the universe that the balance will come if I made some changes.

Over the weekend I helped out two different teachers get covers. It was epic, getting everyone sorted out across two studios on different days and times. Resistance did kick in I was over thinking, staring at my roster looking for an answer. The answers came when I asked for some inner guidance. We fixed it everyone got the covers they needed.

What did I get out of it? Four different classes at times I never or rarely teach. I was so excited about this. New people to teach, also students I know & never get to teach would be at these classes. Mixing it up for all of us. Randomness ahoy Soul! I had to juggle the day job a bit but hey it’s no biggie. When I trust that the best solution for me will present itself & surrender control all will run smoothly.

It’s not been that easy, of course there were challenges in all of this. One class I was not sure about as it meant teaching two classes back to back on a school night. I’ve not done a b2b for ages so why not go freaking crazy balls that week.  By taking on the double I get a whole Saturday off! I’m usually out and about on Saturdays doing self-love things after teaching and buying the weekly food supply. The Saturday I switched is a blank canvas. All I need to do it throw some paint on it. How lovely.

Now I will be more aware when I’m feeling the grind of every day life that I need to mix it up. Get uncomfortable when I’m too comfortable. It’s not that hard and if it’s the right thing for me it will all come about. However, like with everything, I need to take action for myself. Trigger that spark of thought for something new and then give the universe permission to help me out in showing me the way.

Have you done something totally random recently and loved every minute of it? Please share in the comments below.

Backyard Chooks

What is a chook I hear everyone outside of Australia cry? It’s a slang/pet name for a chicken. I love chickens. They are such fascinating creatures and make amazing pets. Have you ever seen the movie Chicken Run? It is so true to life. Just sitting and observing chickens going about their daily business I often think ‘what are they up to, what have they got planned?’ Hopefully my chickens are not planning a prison break like the Aardman chickens. Why would they? My ‘girls’ are treated like the princesses they are.

I’m blessed to live on a property that allows a lot of space for a good size chicken run, or two actually. The space inside both runs is ample for what can be classed as ‘free range.’ The runs offer night time security from hungry predators, perches to hang out with their ‘flock mates’ and a quiet, secluded place for the hens to lay there daily egg. During the morning after ‘laying time’ is done the girls are literally climbing the fence to get out and out they go! This is free ranging. Off they go to roam free, run amok, have a scratch in real dirt, forage for interesting snacks and have the space to flap their wings.

Chickens are such gentle animals. They liked to be picked up and cuddled. My partner is a dedicated ‘chicken hugger.’ I often find myself talking ‘chook’ to them. You know, bock, bock noises?! Come on you talk to your dog don’t you, why not your chickens?

We have about thirty chickens and three roosters. When we first started out the backyard Chook Empire there were no men allowed. Then I fell in love with a huge orange Wyandotte rooster and the rest was history. Rambo was our first rooster and served us well. He was followed by Hef (named after Playboy’s Hugh Hefner as like my chicken Hef, he has/had lots of girlfriends) It’s easier to name the men as they stand out, the girls lost their names a long time ago, there are just too many!

The flock is made up of a combination of Wyandotte’s, Isa Browns and Chinese Bantam’s. The Isa’s were ‘rescued’ from a local egg farm. I say rescued, they are sold for $20 and we happily pay that to give them a better life. They come from cages or the barn style free-range establishments. Usually their feathers are tatty with pale, floppy combs. A week or two in the outdoors and they are like new!

I’m totally biased but our eggs are amazing!! Our regular customers agree. I can’t fill the demand some weeks. All the money we collect, $4 a dozen, goes straight back into the chicken account or the ‘girl’s money box’ as I call it. They do have a money box, it’s right there in the fridge by the eggs. The cash pays for their feed or anything else they need. Our eggs are so good. The yokes are bright yellow and the whites nice & clear. They taste so much better than shop bought eggs, even other free-range organic eggs.

With every living thing there is always an energy transfer. This energy can be positive or negative. If the animal producing the product, like eggs, is happy and content the energy going into producing that egg will be happy. If the animal is suffering or is having a crappy life this negative energy will be transferred. Then when we consume that product we are digesting that energy, good or bad. Wouldn’t you much rather be consuming energy happy energy? Yes, because happy energy makes us happy and vise versa. I am more than happy to eat my chickens eggs as I know first hand they are happy. There produce is a living statement of this.

We try & support chicken charities where we can. My partner asked for cash donations for his thirtieth birthday instead of presents. He raised over $400 for the RSPCA charity – Hen’s deserve better. http://www.hensdeservebetter.org.au Everyone can do his or her bit too. Spend a little more and buy free range, even better organic. You will notice the quality and taste is better. Also tune in and see how you feel inside after digesting the ‘happy energy.’

Love, light & chicken hugs,

Seren
