Breakfast at your desk

Breakfasting at work is the norm for me. It is actually my favourite meal as ‘breakfast’ type foods are so blooming good. I like variety too, mixing up what I have. Obviously the food I choose has to be portable and easily assembled in the office kitchen. No scrambled eggs or omelettes sadly. Recently I’m loving this combo. Hard boiled eggs from my chickens with fresh avocado spread onto freshly toasted olive sourdough. Yum! Cheap, easy, fresh and filling.

What’s your breakfast food of choice?

Bon appetite!

Balancing Act

It’s Autumn Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. Perfect time as we reach this change of season to talk about balance. The word balance appears a lot in our every day lives. Eat a balanced diet, stay balanced, balance your life, balance the books, it’s a balancing act! In our physical lives we are living in forward motion, dictated by time. There is a lot going on all at once for most of us. This can cause imbalance. Our human body is naturally unbalanced as it is divided from the spiritual or invisible part of us, our Soul, whilst we are in human existence.

Imagine an old fashioned weighing scale with a centre point and two arms on either side. What happens when you add too much weight to one side? That side shoots up, the other down & imbalance occurs. What do you do? Add weight to the counter side or take a little weight off so the scale ‘balances’ or comes back to centre. Just like the scales our lives & our bodies have to come back to centre in order to balance. When our physical and spiritual forms are together as one we are balanced. How do we achieve this balance? We need to stop moving and connect within.

The inspiration for this post was sparked by a question posed to me last week. I was asked if I’d given up my day job that requires me to work a 40-hour week on a nine to five schedule. No I replied I still work full time, as I love what I do. Why would someone ask me if I’d given up my job in the first place? Let me enlighten you. It is not my only job. I also teach Bikram yoga part time as well as undertaking regular freelance design work, my daily commute can take up to a 1.5 hours (one way), I write this blog, practice Reiki healing, oil paint, pole dance, do yoga amongst other hobbies all whilst maintaining a house and relationship. How can you do all this I hear your scream. BALANCE!

It hasn’t always been so easy for me. About ten months ago I was running myself into the ground. I had all the above jobs and activities going on in my life but there was no balance. I was stuck and desperately needed some guidance. I was recommended by a friend to contact a Soul Mentor with whom I had a personal email session. This first session lead me onto the journey I am currently travelling. With direction from my Mentor I have learned to follow my inner guide, we all have one, here’s that word again our Soul, thus creating the much needed balance in my life.

To onlookers my life might still seem crazy busy. To me it flows without effort or strain. It does not at all seem busy because I am leading from my Soul base. All my jobs and activities are aligned with my life purpose. I eliminated the parts of my life that were causing me strain and discomfort. I took control, owned my own worth and most importantly focused on what I love in life. When you live authentically life is simple and easy. Just like nature it becomes natural, the way it’s meant to be, nothing forced or burdensome.

Have you noticed when you’re running round like a headless chicken, trying to please everyone, be everything to everybody time just flies and there never seems to be enough hours in the day? You feel stressed and grumpy and pretty much not happy. It doesn’t have to be this way! If I can squeeze all the above into my life you can too.

How do I do it? I simply slow down and come back to stillness. I stop what I’m doing. Take time out to close my eyes, be still and breathe. This is how to get in touch with yourself, the real Self, inside your core. When you become still at your centre point the scales balance, both sides are equal, that is where all your answers lie and time will stand still for you. Quite the mind, focus on the point that lies in the pause between your thoughts, between your breath. This is stillness. I tell my yoga students this all the time in savasana posture but it’s a skill you can apply any time of the day.

Anyone can live authentically you just need to take action for yourself. No one but you can control your life you need to be the instigator. When you allocate time to something you really love, time opens up for you, slows down for you to give you the time to do something that will nourish you on all levels. It really does, you just need to desire it without doubt. It’s happening to me right now. I was so pumped up with inspiration to write this post, I truly desired to have the time to write. Guess what, my workload dried up, literally nothing to do, allowing me the time to write unhindered.

Allocate time to do something you love and see what happens. Just like I talked about in the post ‘Treat Yourself.’ Put in the effort and reap the benefits, you will be rewarded, it may not be obvious at first but soon it will be. All you need to do is find that stillness and balance will follow.

Love & light,

Seren xx

Energy Vampires

This post has nothing to do with brooding teenagers and their undead pointy-toothed ‘vegetarian’ lovers. No blood will be sucked either, just energy!

I started using the term “Energy Vampire” after it came into my awareness that some people I know literally suck the life out of me. Bleed me dry of energy. They leave me feeling exhausted, depleted and hung over even though no alcohol had been consumed. I’d wake up the morning after feeling like I’d been run over by a truck. Ever had that feeling after a meet up with certain friends? I’m sure we all have them in our circle.

Please don’t get me wrong I use the term Energy Vampire with the kindest of endearment. My energy hungry friends are lovely that is why they are my friends. It is natural for me to attract people who need rescuing. I like rescuing people and looking after them. Get them out of the holes there’re in and back on track. It’s part of who I am. I’m here to help, to heal & to give. I am happy too but now on my terms.

On my current path of cleaner living I’ve found my intuition has been enhanced, my non-physical senses are sharper and my light is brighter. Before I became aware of this amazing knock on effect I’d created I’d get sucked into other people’s chaos and in turn come away just as depleted as them. My Energy Vampires always have something wrong with them, you might have a cold but this friend has flu, a sore throat and pneumonia! Get the idea? There’s always a drama going on bigger & better than anyone else’s. That’s cool, that’s life. They need to down load, get advise and reassurance that everything will be ok. They want to talk, a lot, without coming up for air or letting anyone else have a breath. My mistake used to be I’d give them that reassurance & support by personalizing. That’s how my energy was lost.

We’ve all done it. If someone is telling a story and looking for some advice the easiest thing to do is say ‘yes me too, that happened to me!’ Instantly you feel like you’re supporting them as you’ve been through the same thing. You feel you can give honest advice because you have felt their pain yourself. There it is. The moment you personalize you do feel their pain, you take it right off them and into you. That’s why you feel so hungover the next day as you are now carrying that friends pain yourself.

Energy transfers happen that easily. As soon as you say ‘me too’ an invisible cord (an etheric cord) with a big fat fishing hook on the end shoots out of your friend and attaches right inside of you. Hooks in. Just like an electric cable this cord allows your friend to suck your precious energy from you, filling up their tank with you kind, loving and happy energy. It’s a two way street of course, when we give we also receive. In this situation the giver gets a bum deal as you receive back their pain and misery. These cords stay attached too, they can tap in at anytime even when you’re not together, especially when they are thinking about you and vise versa.

How do you stop these cords from getting attached & your energy sucked? Simple. Listen and do not personlise. You can give a lot of support without even saying a word by listening. If they ask you ‘what do you think?’ turn it back around to them, ‘what do you think you should do?’ Get them to try and figure it out for themselves. Yes they have come to you for advice the best advice you can give is to get them to figure it out for themselves. They will feel so liberated knowing they had the power to sort themselves out rather than just be told what to do by you. We are all different anyway, what you might work for you might not work some someone else. We all have this power of knowing inside of us we just need to access it & trust it. It’s so easy to be influenced by other people’s thoughts and actions. This is not being authentic to our true selves.

Really start to notice how you feel when you stop personalizing. Do you feel lighter? Less oppressed? It takes practice; it is hard I fall off the wagon too from time to time. The words ‘me too’ fly out too very at times. It doesn’t have to. If you are listening, being still within yourself it becomes easy to stay neutral. No cords will attach, no social hangovers will occur. If you feel a cord has attached, cut it. Imagine a big pair of scissors and snip it away. Send it into the universe to be taken care of.

Give it a go this week. You will be a much stronger, supportive friend and keep hold of your precious energy. Lead from your heart and send out loving, supporting thoughts to your friends and everyone will reap the rewards.

Love & light,

Seren xx

Treat Yourself!

When was the last time your really gave yourself a treat that made you feel fully enriched and grateful to be you? It doesn’t have to be big or expensive. It doesn’t have to cost you anything at all actually. Taking some YOU time is important, it makes your soul happy!

There is nothing wrong with giving back to you. Do not feel like you are being frivolous, self-indulgent or vein. We need to take some time to honour ourselves every now and again to recharge and get in touch with our core.

I am very proactive in my life. I’m not one for sitting back and letting others do all the work. I take action and responsibility for myself. If I want something done or I wish something to happen I go out there and make it happen. This can be a huge double-edged sword. I tend to take on too much, try to do it all by myself and not ask for help. I hate letting people down so I do more than I should. My efforts are always 110% and I go hard to get everything achieved. In order to get everything done I often ignore the messages my body is telling me intuitively to the point a physical message is needed. The result is I break. Usually I physically manifest shoulder pain or exhaustion. At this point I’m so far involved I mentally I start hating the people putting pressure on me or draining my resources. It’s not their fault at all it’s me not setting my boundaries.

Over the past eight months I have really learnt to slow down and take care of myself before I break down. Being in a slow state of mind and listening within has really helped me discern how to use my time and skills wisely. I fall off the wagon for sure. This is a reminder to come back to my authenticity, lead from within. When I physically break, it’s my soul telling me I’m not aligned with how she ticks. This is why I have started to give myself regular treats and me time. This nourishes and takes care of both my physical and spiritual body. I lock it into my schedule to make sure I do take the time out.

As I said earlier it doesn’t have to cost you anything. You could simply take a twenty-minute soak in a hot bath whilst reading a novel or chilling to your favourite music. You can’t get much cheaper than a walk on the beach! I call these moments ‘mini me time.’ Every week I take time out to oil paint, read, watch a movie or pamper myself at home with a pedicure or facial.

I do however invest my hard earned cash back into a big monthly treat. I head down to a divine day spa in the city for a treatment, usually a massage. It is higher end than most people would like but I love it. I first discovered the spa a few years back because of it’s 100% organic philosophy. This is something that is important to me, even more so now as I try to avoid harsh chemicals.

There is nothing more relaxing than having a massage. I’ve built a bond with the staff  as they take the time to get to know their clients. I do not mind paying the higher price as I love the whole package I get. The soothing environment, indoor voices, plinky plunky Tibetan bowl music, fluffy towels & tea & fruit in the chill out lounge afterwards. I literally drift out of there feeling relaxed and happy on all levels. A two-hour retreat at the end of a busy week what more could you ask for. I don’t even justify the cost any more. I just do it. My body tells me it’s happy and rewards me for looking after it so that’s enough for me. I did give up my treat for nearly a year in 2011 & wow did I miss it. Now I’m back in the spa routine I’ll never sacrifice it again.

What do you do to have some ‘me’ time? Please share in the comments below we’d love to hear from you…

Love & light,

Seren xx
